March is full of events, bagpipes and spring. International Bagpipe Day (March 10) has brought on a flurry of media attention. PRI The World featured an interview with Marco Werman on bagpipes (pictured) and Radio5Live, Radio Leeds and Radio Hertforshire and Worcester all featured International Bagpipe Day prominently. IBD, a fixture since the first International Bagpipe Conference in March 2012, was imagined by Andy Letcher from the Bagpipe Society and has now spread all over the world as pipers from Iran, Belarus, USA, UK, Greece, Germany, Sweden, Hungary, Tasmania, Canada, Belgium, Spain and France all celebrate in unison. March is also the month where gigs pick up with Amaraterra at Jamboree (13th) and at the Olympic park (28th), World Scatterlings (27th) and the Red Rock Ceilidh Band (9th). All this intercultural music-making led to a talk at Cambridge University for the Arts and Social Justice seminar series, convened by Pam Burnard. |
